9 Harelaw Road, Edinburgh, House Extension

9 Harelaw Road is a substantial rosemary tiled villa constructed in the 1930s. The upper floor is entirely contained within the roof space. Our clients wished a large new living room which took advantage of their back garden and a new master bedroom and bathroom above.

We persuaded them to continue the form of the existing roof and allowed the house to take up the fall in the garden so that the living room section becomes substantial in height. The consequent spreading of the roof has been taken up in a glazed loggia on three sides of the living room. This connects to the inside of the house with two "disappearing corners" sliding window systems which in the summer time ensure that the living room is an integral part of the garden. Above, the master bedroom has a balcony and an extensive view from the bed.
