Postgraduate Housing at Queens University Belfast Submitted for Planning Permission
A major 260 bed accommodation development for postgraduate students at Queen’s University Belfast has been submitted for planning permission. The project, designed in collaboration with RPP Architects in Belfast, is adjacent to the University's undergraduate housing near Malone Road and takes the form of a single perimeter block enclosing three sides of a garden. Unusually the flats, which range from studio through to four person combinations, are accessed entirely from external staircases with each flat having its own external space looking onto the garden. A new webpage has been posted which describes the project.
A Chance to Live in One of Our Houses!
Fife Council has granted planning permission for a new house within the conservation area of Aberdour Village. The clients, who live in an adjacent house, will shortly be marketing the site for sale with the full planning permission. The house has a substantial private garden onto which all the major rooms open. A new webpage has been created where all the plans cans be seen.
Glasgow Housing Association Selects Richard Murphy Architects for Their Framework Agreement
We are delighted to be one of four architect lead teams selected by GHA for their framework agreement for major sites on the Gallowgate in Glasgow, near to our Moore Street project and elsewhere in Glasgow.
….And We Are Shortlisted for a Community Arts Centre in Barnard Castle, County Durham
The Witham Centre in Barnard Castle has selected us along with four London architects for a competition to design community arts and commercial space within and adjacent to their historic building.
Moore Street Housing and the New British High Commission in Colombo Shortlisted for Awards
The Scottish Design Awards have selected both our entries this year for nomination. Moore Street housing, master-planned by ourselves and built along with Page\Park, JM Architects and Elder & Cannon is nominated within the public housing sector and the British High Commission in Colombo has been nominated in the public building sector. Results are announced on the 29 May.
Meanwhile, the RIBA has selected Moore Street housing for short-listing in their annual awards scheme and we are hoping to add to our existing tally of 15 RIBA awards garnered over the years.
University of East London Computer Library and Lecture Theatre Almost Complete
In the last newsletter we illustrated the almost finished Education Faculty building. This has now been handed over. Now the third building of our four building master-plan for the University will be handed over next month. New pictures of the 400 seat computer library and 400 seat lecture theatre have been posted on the webpage. Landscaping, which forms the heart of the new entrance court to the Stratford campus, is also in the process of being completed. The new campus buildings are expected to be officially opened, in October.

Heritage Lottery Grant for Perth Theatre
A Heritage Lottery grant has been awarded to Perth theatre which is about four months away from being submitted for planning permission.
Press
The March issue of the Architectural Review devoted ten pages to the new British High Commission in Colombo. David Robson's article is printed in full on the webpage. We were delighted that the High Commissioner told him that “"Having seen and worked in lots of embassies around the world, I think it’s the most dramatic and beautiful building that we have!".” New Photographs have also been posted there.
Canongate Housing - Old Town, Edinburgh, Housing on Old Fishmarket Close, Edinburgh and Housing at Graham Square, Glasgow all feature in the new RIBA Book of British Housing published in January of this year by Elsevier/Architectural Press. This is the second edition of The RIBA Book of 20th Century British Housing published in 1999. The book aims to promote the highest quality in housing design and we are delighted that three of our housing projects have been included in the publication.
Lectures
Richard has lectured widely in the last three months.
Three lectures within twenty four hours to students and architects at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia; a lecture to students at Colombo University School of Architecture and a lecture to the NE region of the RIBA in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Richard’s knowledge on Scarpa is always in great demand too, with a lecture at Edinburgh University and a forthcoming collaborative lecture at DCA in December with the artist Martin Boyce who is exhibiting at the Scottish Pavilion in Venice Biennale this summer.
Matt Bremner is to give a lecture at our Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre in Peebles on 31 March as part of the events the theatre has organised to celebrate the building’s fifth birthday. Matt will speak about the design and building process of the theatre.
Anniversaries
Bill and Richard attended a dinner in Dundee for the tenth anniversary of the opening of Dundee Contemporary Arts. Virtually the entire team that set up this remarkably forward thinking project had been reassembled and the evening finished in the incredibly crowded bar, the popularity of which speaks for itself. And the following week Matt and Richard attended a special performance of the “lassies’ O!” at Peebles Eastgate Theatre to mark their fifth anniversary. Both venues seem to be going from strength to strength.
And Finally...
On a ski holiday near Chamonix recently, Richard opted to take the quick route down the mountain...
