Sri Lanka British High Commission to be Officially Opened in May
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have informed us that the new British High Commission will be formally opened in May and High Commission staff are expected to move into the building shortly afterwards. Richard Murphy will be representing the practice at the opening. Here are some recent photographs of the building approaching completion.
Proposals for an Auditorium Building for Jesus College, Cambridge
Jesus College have allowed us to show drawings of the latest proposals for an auditorium building where we have been commissioned to develop the design. A new webpage has been created.
Two New Commissions in Northern Ireland
We are delighted to announce two new commissions in Northern Ireland, an area of the UK in which we have yet to build. Both commissions have been won in association with RPP architects of Belfast.
Queen’s University Belfast have commissioned us to design 270 residences for postgraduates on a site off Malone Road as part of their residential campus. The residences will be a mixture of 1, 2 3 and 4 person flats and sit in a mature but disused garden area in a sensitive residential area.
In the same month we were also successful in being commissioned by the Northern Ireland Health Executive in a competitive interview for a series of buildings as part of a framework agreement. Our first commission will be a residential mental health centre in Belfast.
Images of both projects will be published when the projects are submitted for planning permission.
Images of Buildings on Site:
We have a number of projects on site; here is a selection of images from around the country.
University of East London, Stratford
Our two buildings for the University of East London continue to grow quickly. Here are images of the 400 seat lecture theatre and computer building taken from the top of the site crane and a view of the atrium of the education faculty building. New images of the interior of the computer library have been added to the webpage.
Kirkintilloch Adult Learning Centre Extension
The steel frame is now in place and the extension to our own building should be complete by October 2008.
Cramond Housing
Work continues apace on the final two sections; illustrated here are the Flats (currently up to first floor level are due for completion in October) and construction of the Phase IV Houses has shifted to timber frame.
Melbourne Street, Glasgow
Construction of our flats for Molendinar Park has now reached the second floor. Shown here is a construction photo of our proposed flats enclosing our private courtyard with the entrance canopy in the foreground. Elder and Cannon’s building is shown behind.
Harlow Housing
Five of the houses at Harlow along the southern edge of the site have now been occupied and the middle section is now beginning to take shape. A major Building Study article about the development was published in Building Design last week.
New Nursery School at Edinburgh Academy
In a very speedy contract the steelwork is now complete just over one month after the contract began and the roof should be complete by the beginning of June.
Two Buildings Shortlisted for Awards
The Conan Doyle Medical Centre at Liberton was shortlisted for the Edinburgh Architectural Annual Award. We didn’t win, but the Medical Centre has also been shortlisted for the Prospect Magazine Scottish Design Awards due to be announced on 16 May. Our house at Colinton was also shortlisted by the same Awards judges.
Press
Our house extension at Wooler in Northumberland was featured in the Saturday Telegraph’s property section in February this year. The article said that the Practice’s one off house designs “have a clarity, detailing and vision that pack a punch that often bellies their scale”.
Richard and the practice were featured in Self Build and Design magazine entitled “Design above Fashion”. The article focused on the new houses the practice has built over recent years - including Richard’s mews house at Regent Terrace Mews; and the houses at Pentland Avenue, Edinburgh; Milldale, Aberdeenshire; Killeenaran, Ireland; and, the mews house at Circus Lane, Edinburgh.
As ever, our proposals for the Haymarket site in Edinburgh received much publicity particularly in the local press.
Lectures
Richard is to give a lecture of the practice’s recent work on 3 June this year to ARCHIE the student architectural Society at the Edinburgh College of Art. He has also been invited to give a talk by the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI) on 30 June at Cripps Court, Magdalene College, Cambridge.
and Finally.....
Almost half the office spent last weekend camping and hill walking in the Lake District. On Saturday the hill walk was from Langdale over Bowfell and onward to Scafell Pike (the highest place in England) - here’s the picture to prove it! Then on Sunday some of us climbed Jack's Rake (a very dramatic scramble route up Pavey Ark).
