New Images of Office Development, Justice Mill Lane, Aberdeen

The largest project in the office continues apace with staged building warrant applications submitted for the £35m Hotel and Office, Development at Justice Mill Lane. A start on site is anticipated in the New Year. At the moment the office is in the middle of working drawings for both the Radisson Park Inn Aberdeen hotel and the atrium office building adjacent. In the meantime we have been commissioned to produce images of the office for marketing purposes and these have been added to the web page, two of which are illustrated here.

Stratheden Mental Health Unit Submitted for Planning

View Looking North East View to Courtyard

An application for planning permission has been submitted for an 18 single bedroomed senile dementia residential care facility at Statheden Hospital near Cupar, Fife. This project was won in interview with Interserve Contractors direct from NHS Fife and is a south facing U-shaped plan. The individual bedrooms are each given individual roofs with the communal facilities looking out across a secure garden and on through to a framed view of the nearby hills. Construction is expected to start in March 2008. A new webpage has been created for the project.

New Commissions

Also in Fife the practice has been commissioned to design a substantial private house on a spectacular site in the village of Aberdour and we anticipate submitting a planning application before Christmas.

Having completed a feasibility study for Perth College this summer, the College has now returned to commission us to develop a number of projects around the campus to the next stage.

Official Openings

The Conan Doyle Health Centre has been officially opened with a party on the premises. The new Health Centre at Cameron Toll Edinburgh was christened by Doctor Ramon McDermott who said that all the staff were very pleased with the building. Meanwhile the official opening of the University of East London Clinical Education Building (incorporating Podiatry and Physiotherapy Departments and the London Foot Hospital) at Stratford has been tentatively arranged for 29 January 2008.

Progress of Our Current Projects for the University of East London

The steel frame for both our projects at the Stratford Campus of the University of East London is now substantially complete. Pictured here is the Education Faculty on the left and the Computer Centre/Lecture Theatre on the right. Both buildings are expected to be complete for the new academic year.

Work has also begun on the construction of the next phase of our Housing at Cramond in Edinburgh, with the construction of 32 flats there.

Competitions

This has been a very busy couple of months. Robert Gordon University Aberdeen have received our submission for a new Architecture School and Ochil Developments have also received our proposals for a new Golf Club at their "G West" development adjacent to Gleneagles. We will also be submitting our design shortly for a new Group Practice and Community Health Centre in Enniskillen, Belfast to the Northern Ireland Health Group. All three projects will be published in our next newsletter.

Two New Awards

We were delighted to receive a Gold Award for our terraced housing design at Newhall, Harlow. Our clients, Jon and William Moen collected the award at the Annual "What House?" lunch in London. The judges said it was a "clear and outstanding winner". When the first house was officially opened earlier this summer, the architects from all the projects on the site were photographed on the terrace of our house; Richard Murphy, Roger Evans & Associates of Oxford, ECD Architects of London and ORMS Architecture of London alongside our clients Jon and William Moen.

Meanwhile, James Mason picked up the Dundee Institute of Architects "Building of the Decade" for Dundee Contemporary Arts at their annual dinner. It's over ten years since we won the competition, and eight years since the building opened but good to see it is still collecting awards and more importantly working and wearing well.

Recent Press

The Haymarket project (presently submitted for planning permission) continues to attract lots of interest in the local press and two other local Edinburgh projects have also been given some attention - the new nursery school (with after school facilities) at the Edinburgh Academy, Stockbridge, was featured in the Edinburgh Evening News on 18 September and our new house at Pentland Avenue appeared in Grand Designs Magazine in their December issue. The article described the house as being a "light filled masterpiece" and "a secret treasure".

Office Trip to Madrid

The office enjoyed an expedition to Madrid in November visiting Moneo's new Prado Extension, the town of Toledo and El Escorial as well as Richard Rogers Madrid Barajas Airport Terminal 4. Pictured here are some of the team making use of Segway electric scooters in Toledo!

And Finally...

Richard Murphy and James Simpson

Richard collected his OBE for services to architecture from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace at the end of November. By happy coincidence, also collecting an OBE for Services to the Built Heritage in Scotland at the same investiture was Richard's one-time employer (and now frequent collaborator) James Simpson from Simpson and Brown Architects, pictured here upstaging Richard in the sartorial department.
