House Extension, Seton Place, Edinburgh

This house extension to a Victorian stone terraced house on the south side of Edinburgh is in the tradition of a number of similar projects completed by the office in its early years but now rarely contemplated. This probably will be the last of its type.

The project typically not only adds an additional room to the rear of the house, but also attempts to make sense of the kitchen accommodation in the existing building. The simple design takes advantage of a fall on the site to make a stepped section falling respectively from kitchen to dining area to living area so that the kitchen, which previously had no visual connection to the garden, now connects to it by looking across the dining and living area. The new garden room is, once again, an expressed steel structure with a floating lead roof and sliding glass windows which in this instance slide in an unusual manner into the body of the garden to allow the whole corner of the room to disappear. Light is also brought in through a clerestorey window taking advantage of the change of section to light the dining area beneath.

The project was completed in December 2004.
